Samuel Johnson is situated within an urban ecosystem on the outskirts of Lichfield. The site is within close proximity to numerous habitat types; which house various species. The site does sit within very close proximity (0.4km) to the Stowe Pool and Walk Mill Clay Pit Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which support large and healthy populations of the native white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) – a BAP Priority Species. Space on site is limited, though there are a small number of trees located around site – as well as courtyards that contain container planting. The hospital joined the NHS Forest network in 2022.
